Boyz 2 men II and Weezer the blue album both in 1994. I was in 4th grade and I bought one album to try to fit in with completely different crowds because I felt like I would be pigeon holed if I bought one type of music.

Before that I received Green Day’s Insomniac and Counting Crows’ August and Everything After.

You guys are so nice, funny and generally awesome, and Paul Sheer is just, wow, a sea of f**king hilarious stories. Some many fun moments in the episode from lieutenant buttocks – “there was a gas leak sir, silent, but deadly” – the pinata vengeance sketch, to the curtains draped over the Olsen skeleton… good stuff.
So the first record I ever bought with my own money was… well, like Paul, there were two at the same time, one was N.W.A’s “Efil4zaggin” on vinyl, and the other, Adam Sandler’s “They’re All Gonna Laugh At You!” on cassette. Both of these purchases lasted well into the late 90’s until “They’re All Gonna Laugh At You!” got stuck in the tape deck of my grandmothers’s Cadillac Eldorado and “Efil4zaggin” got snapped after Fatty Malls borrowed it for a Big Throwback party he was spinning at.

I am pretty sure the only songs I ever listened to after I purchased it were Barbie Girl and Dr. Jones. Surprisingly enough I turned out to be a sort of well adjusted heterosexual man.

Great episode as always folks!

Not an opportunistic cash-in at all, it featured Do the Bartman (co-written by Michael Jackson!), Deep Deep Trouble, and ten other unmemorable songs. I can safely say that I have not listened to it this century.

My first album, bought with my own money, was Nazareth’s Expect No Mercy with a kick ass Frazetta cover. Dripping in Satan for sure. Listened to the grooves off of that bad boy.

He never disappoints and is always fun and hilarious. I purchased my first CDs in the 8th grade. It was Third Eye Blind “S/T” and/or The Wallflowers “Bringing Down the House.” I was a very sensitive and introspective youth.

Loved this episode and your wonderful guest like I love my Cheddar EXPLOSION Mac N’ Cheese, yum!

Picture it, 1994! Schindler’s List wins 7 Oscars, the brilliant Kurt Cobain passes from this world, OJ Simpson flees police in his white Ford Bronco, and a young high schooler finds himself drawn in by the most unlikely of beats. Beats that will soon take him of his hard “earned” money.

That high schooler is me.

Sophmore at a high school in Pasadena, spending countless hours mixing between K-Earth 101 and Power 106. A pleasant blend of oldies and west coast rap. Among the various songs, one stood out like a spotlight, The Beastie Boy’s “Get It Together” feat. Q-Tip. The rhythm of the song, the unique sound unlike most other current rap songs, it drew me in.

I found myself walking up the steps of the now extinct Tower Records, grasping the “Parental Advisory Explicit Lyrics” stickered CASSETTE in my hand and walking it up to the register. A handful of crumpled dollars and loose changed slammed to the counter and moments later, I had my green tape in my hands.

I’d like to say it was met with positive reviews amongst my friends, but it was mostly “Beastie Boys?!” or laughter. Later that year at least half of the songs were made into popular music videos including the MTV MVA Best Music Video winner “Sabotage” I don’t own that cassette anymore. But I’m ok with that because, what would I play it on?

I just discovered this through Paul Scheer on Twitter, but I will definately check out the earlier episodes after this! Instant fan!
Paul is such a fun guy, and I really loved the “Meet Dave” story! Shame he lost the part as Lieutenant Buttocks tho, haha.. The whole episode was so entertaining, it’s hard to point out the funniest parts!
I think the first CD i bought with my own allowance was “Faith No More – The Real Thing”. It was such a long time ago, I really don’t know where my mind was and why this particular CD was “the chosen one”, but I still give it a spin every now and then…

I never got around to seeing it or Tron until a few years ago. I agree with Paul about both: Tron was great, but it would have been better to leave The Black Hole as a movie that I always wanted to see but never got around to.

For wise-cracking charismatic action hero, it should be Nathan Fillion. That’s depressing that Shia LeBouf and Ryan Reynolds are even in the conversation.

When is Paul going to host SNL? He’s long overdue.

I was considering starting a class action lawsuit over the “live” Childrens Hospital finale, but then I saw on the The A.V. Club that NTSF:SD:SUV got picked up, so it’s all good.

I remember the first CD I bought was Queen – Classic Queen, circa Wayne’s World. However, for several years before that I bought tapes, but I don’t remember the first one.

Then I learned every Weezer song on my violin. That was last week. Mow I am a 2yo and two weeks. I am a child genius.

But seriously.

I have laser eyes.

It’s good to see Paul Scheer getting well deserved attentioned. He has worked very hard and is an unparallelled performer. Human Giant was great and he killsit on The League. I missed The League Live but heard it was amazing.

Good work PmC

I loved the Disney Robin Hood soundtrack (the one with the foxes).

The first cassette I ever bought was Rhythm Nation by Janet Jackson. My friends and I listened to it endlessly.

My first CD was one of Mannheim Steamroller’s Christmas CDs. Either A Fresh Aire Christmas or Christmas Extraordinnaire.

I love the “firsts” question and thinking about my own firsts.

okay, for the first time ever I’m admitting this. The first CD I ever bought was the Baywatch soundtrack. I have NO IDEA WHY but I listened to it all the time. I was a total teen girl about it. I honestly think the theme song gave me chills. I was thirteen and had a crush on every boy.
The first CD ever gifted to me was a Tony! Toni! Tone! CD. Ugh.

If I had to take a stab at it, I would guess Madonna’s “True Blue”. However this is just a guess, and should be regarded accordingly. In reality, I’m sure it was something much edgier and cooler, like I was. *cough*

But that wasn’t the first album I owned cause I had a few tapes before then. Ruining my indie cred, I’m fairly certain my first cassette that I bought was either Bette Midler’s Beaches or Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Greatest Hits. I was a sucker for cliche musicals in my tween years.

Big fan of Paul’s (as well as Rob & Aziz) First cassette I bought with my own money: LL Cool J’s “Bigger & Deffer.” Having just received DMC’s “Raising Hell” & the Beastie’s “Licensed to Ill” earlier for my birthday, I was in my full-on “Yo! MTV Raps” hip hop phase. This would later be followed in my musical development by the well known, “Beatles phase”, the typical junior high “Led Zeppelin phase” and would eventually lead to the early/mid-ninties “120 minutes” phase. Between “Yo! MTV Raps” & “120 Minutes” I feel like I had my bases covered. I miss the days when a mixTAPE meant something.

Hm… first CD I bought with my money was probably the South Park soundtrack… that being said, as a child, several time I would sign up for BMG to get the “10 Free CD’s”. Then my mom would have to get a bill, get mad at me, pay the bonkers amount of shipping then ask them to cancel the account since they somehow allowed a child to open it. If that counts then the first CD I remember choosing on my own was Weird Al’s Bad Hair Day.

Now that I think about it, I remember getting a cassette player at a very young age and the for reasons beyond me the only tape I had was a single of “How Can We Be Lovers” by Michael Bolton. I was a weird little kid.

The first record I ever bought with my own money was Linkin Park’s Meteora when I was 12. I had previously borrowed (stole) Hybrid Theory from my older sister and it never left my CD player. My family went on vacation not long after I got it and it was the only CD I brought and needed. In 12 hour drive, I must have listened to it 20 times. I still listen to it but it’s kind of a guilty pleasure.

The twins deserve to have that ‘don’t talk to me’ attitude. Loved Paul on Parks and Recreation. As for the question I feel like I’m always the wrong demographic. The first record I bought was last year with my paycheck. That was The Who’s Tommy. My first allowance bought CD was in 1999 and that was Smash Mouth’s Astro Lounge. All Star was my jam. I still constantly listen to it.
