Just re-listened to this one, and I have to say – Pattycake Cats is (in my opinion) the FUNNIEST thing I saw on YouTube this year. Maybe I’m the only one… but I laugh hysterically everytime!

I always love A Christmas Story and can quote it word for word but the one closest to my heart is A Very Brady Christmas. When Mike gets trapped underground and Carol can sing again and it helps him out… that’s how I really learn about Christmas miracles.

In my house, it was A Christmas Story. I know everyone loves it now, but my family and I watched it before it was cool. My parents were some of the first people to get HBO, and my dad was a prolific taper, so he taped it as soon as he could (though I don’t know when that was — it came out in ’83). My dad was born in in the ’40s and grew up in the ’50s, so this movie reminded him of his childhood. We usually watched a couple of times a year.

I don’t remember if he died before TBS started doing the 24 hour marathon, but I do wish he’d lived long enough to get his own Fragile lamp.

A great episode of the podcast, even if it hadn’t been free! (How’s that for lowering the bar?)

I loved the bit about the Game Show Congress, though I have (possibly faulty) memories of Alex Trebek regularly wearing a ruffled shirt, bow tie, and tux on High Rollers in the 70s. I can’t find any Google images to back this, though. (I did find a scary picture of Art Fleming wearing a checkerboard dinner jacket on Jeopardy though…)

Mike Toomey is hilarious, check him out if you can.

As to the “firsts” question, I don’t really remember us being particularly obsessed with any of them. They were just a ritual: Rudolph, Year Without A Santa Claus (the one with the Heat Miser, by the way), Frosty The Snowman, Little Drummer Boy (I’m old), Charlie Brown Christmas, etc. I suppose the only one I would say I really got excited about *beforehand* was the Star Wars Holiday Special. As I watched it, I quickly became disillusioned. Bah Humbug.

Vanessa was precious at the beginning with those names. I’m a big fan of Jimmy and recommend buying the Pardcastathon. Good cause and freaking funny. My favorite holiday special is Emmett Otter too! That and The Muppet Christmas Carol. I still have both on VHS and watch them yearly. AND the youtube bloopers are hilarious. I got your back, Cole.

I think it would have to be White Christmas. I have 3 much older sisters, and between them and my mother there was a strong control over TV show selection. So, they had well established this preference before I was even aware of watching Christmas specials. But this turned out to be part of my learning to be so very impressed with Danny Kaye in particular. Such a performer, I think he influenced me to pursue it somewhat in my own life.

My family has a very twisted sense of humor. Our holiday tradition is Scrooged with Bill Murray. It used to be on TV every year, then they stopped showing it so we had to get it on DVD. When watching it a few Christmases ago it suddenly occured to me: This movie is in no way appropriate for children. Why did my parents let me watch this every year? God bless them.

Screw off It’s A Wonderful Life. Scrooged forever!

The only Christmas special we ever had around my house growing up was Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer with the Dentist Elf and the Abominable Snowman (I can spell it, but I can’t say it either). I used to watch it OVER and OVER and OVER again, but I would always fast-forward the beginning, because I got sad every time I saw the other reindeer being mean to Rudolph.

Later in life (read: high school) my girlfriend at the time introduced me to Nestor the the Long-Earred Christmas Donkey – which is fantastically terrible.
