When I was eight, I think, I found and fell in love with a black shirt with a sequined chest–must I tell you this was the ’70s?. I found it in a Goodwill shop or somethin’ like that.

My mom didn’t make me wear it, it was all my idea. Which brings up a more troubling question: Why in the hell didn’t she *stop* me?

And believe it or not, I am straight.

A few years later in junior high, I insisted on wearing much-too-short-shorts in PE. (I swear I’m straight)

There are many pictures of me in a maroon crushed velvet suit from when I was about 5 or 6.

Also, in elementary school, i refused to wear anything that wasn’t sweatpants. I had several sets of matching sweatshirts and sweatpants in lovely colors like teal and purple. And yeah, I’m a guy.

I wore rainbow suspenders when I was 14, and I am not sorry. My mom made me wear a hideous flowered blouse to go on random job interviews around town when I was 16.

My mom had a lot of iron ons and puff paint, so I had a bunch of sweat suits with big stupid pictures (picture of a tucan, captioned “Recycle One Can, and Tucan…”, etc) and matching paint jobs on the sweatshirt and maybe down one leg of the sweatpants.

It’s not an outfit exactly, but for about two or three weeks in the third grade my parents let me go to school in rainbow suspenders. The embarrassment still haunts me from time to time.

Love the podcast! While this is technically not my mother dressing me in this outfit, she let me go out in public like this so hopefully it will count.

I was no more than 8 or 9 years old and I wanted to take a ride on my bike, a sweet Haro FST (look it up, its sweet) to the local QT to buy some comics, a slurpee, and play some Rush’N’Attack. But rather than wear typical clothing, I want in my full ninja outfit complete with mask and fake sword.

I don’t think you could get away with that now as the sight of a small ninja riding a freestyle bike would illicit some serious panic in the suburbs.
