I’ve never been a been a reality show person and I don’t think I ever will be, but I was really into the Joe Schmoe Show for it’s first season. A friend had really gotten into it and explained it to me and I had to admit I was interested. For those who don’t know the premise, it was a show where 8 people had to live in a house and each week one was voted off. The catch? Everyone on the show was an actor except for the titular Joe Shmoe (Matt Gould), who didn’t know he was on a fake reality show.

Each actor was playing a reality show archetype (the Rich Bitch, the Gay Guy and Kristian Wiig as the Quack Marriage Counselor. It was really funny. It was also surprisingly dramatic and sweet since Matt was so kind and gullible, so much so that the producers felt a bit bad about it, or so I hear. I don’t want to spoil the show in case you track it down and get into as I did (as funny as it is, the prank leads to some heartbreaking moments), but it is tremendously fun. And I will say that Matt is married with 2 children in what I hope is a happy ending.

Oh, and the guys who created the show went on to make Zombieland.

The only reality show I’ve watched (and scoured the message boards looking for spoilers) regularly is the Amazing Race.

I think the only reality tv show I’ve cared enough to watch every episode of was last year’s Celebrity Big Brother, because I could not stop watching Jedward. It was awful, in a wonderful hypnotic sort of way.

The first reality show that I was obsessed with was one that falls outside the typical reality show canon, but should still qualify: the original Iron Chef from Japan. I was part of the group that watched it while it was still underground – before it had appeared on the Food Network in 1998. I was an undergrad at UC Berkeley when I discovered it one evening, fully subtitled, on the local international channel (channel 26, I think). From that point, I was obsessed – to the point that I’d invite friends and organize dinner parties around watching the newest subtitled episode *every* Saturday evening. (I even went as “Chairman” Kaga a couple of Halloweens during my time at Cal.)

The first Reality Show I was obsessed with was The Amazing Race. Though it wasn’t really an obsession, I absolutely fell for its breakneck pace and puzzles to solve (also why I like Tomb Raider and Adventure video games). It was orienteering on a world scale, and the kind of thing I would love to do, as long as it didn’t involve hanging from wires 500ft up or eating repulsive food.

The first reality show I can remember being obsessed with is Joe Millionaire. I was but a young teenager girl who hated society and their ideals so at the time the show spoke to me.
