I went as Hipster Mermaid to a party this year (complete with a bright red wig and glasses). I thought it was great and I nailed it until various people thought I was Raggedy Ann.

I tried to be an astronaut and used Al foil. It all ripped and I looked like a Jiffy Pop after the fire popped everything!

I never had any super awful ones, but my first year of law school I went as ‘the walk of shame’, and most people got it/thought it was funny, but one person thought the smeared makeup was supposed to be black eyes and a puffy lip, and guessed ‘domestic abuse’… Cuz that’s an awesome costume?
