I played classics like “Log”, “Happy Happy Joy Joy” and “Don’t Wiz on the Electric Fence” until my Dad was sick of it (he liked the show, but adults get sick of things, especially novelty songs, MUCH faster than kids). There were definitely some mornings when he drove me to school where he would just turn it off so we could listen to the news. I can relate. I just worry that if I have children, the same thing will happen, only it will be a terrible cartoon.

Also the novelty songs like Mr. Jaws were fun, but Weird Al is the Man.

Second, though I absolutely loved Weird Al’s music growing up (I mean, “Amish Paradise,” just genius!), my first novelty music exposure was on Christmas Eve, riding with my family in the car and looking at the neighborhood lights. Mom would put on the radio, and we’d listen to the ridiculous parodies, specifically Drunk Elvis singing “Blue Christmas” (http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fYmRMQ-ryAc). Every time I hear it, I’m a giggly little kid again.

A close second would be “Do the Urkel” from “Family Matters” because I was obsessed with all things Urkel, including suspenders. (Here’s a special treat. Urkel and Bea Arthur performing a duet of the song: http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=EG9mXP-cDvM).

I don’t remember how old I was when I first heard it, around 6 I think. I thought it was the most hilarious song/video ever! My babysitter had a Ray Steven’s video tape and I watched it so much I wore it out.

My father was a HUGE fan of comedy music and all things Dr. Demento. He would play pre-recorded shows of Demento while we cleaned and cleaned. Then one night, “Fish heads” by Barnes and Barnes came on and blew my pre-pubescent mind! I didn’t know music could be that different. The creative change that song gave me along with the bonding memory of my father, makes “fish heads” my favorite comedy songs. Thanks for all the laughs you guys give me. It was incredible to see that my favorite podcasts combined!

Or if you count being forced to listen… the earliest one I can remember is a parody of “Reeling in the Years,” entitled “Are You Drinking in Revere.” Thank you, Massachusetts.

I’m pretty sure I even learned most of the lyrics, which didn’t really make me popular in school surprisingly.

Slaughter released an album, I was understandably excited. I remember playing the song “The Cobra Clutch” on our record player over and over. I don’t know how seriously the song was intended to be taken (and as a 10-year-old irony was lost on me anyway) but this definitely qualifies as a novelty song. Listening to it now, it strikes me as the kind of song George W. Bush would have played while planning the war in Iraq. Anyhow, please enjoy it in all its glory, courtesy of YouTube.

If you’ve never heard it, it was an experience (some of the lyrics include two game wardens, seven hunters and a cow) Soon after I asked them what they were singing and my obsession with Tom Lehrer soon took hold.

I heard it on a rerun of Just for Laughs when I was 10 or so, and was singing it non-stop for weeks.
And, I just found out a few months ago that Jian Ghomeshi was in Moxy Fruvous, as a friend of mine is slightly obsessed with him.

I was like 5 when my parents and I were driving in about Oklahoma late at night.

The first song I remember hearing and loving was “Fat”. Being that I was a chubby little kid, it became my theme song and I often sang to bullies before or after they made fun of my weight.

Heck, I still sing it to people. If you ever see a drunken fat chick singing “Fat” at karaoke…that would be me.

Your past guest Weird Al was my first favorite performer. Back in 1984 or 1985 I heard “My Bologna” and have been hooked ever since. 🙂
