I was terrified that I would trip.

He asked who he decided were his “funniest friends” to come up with a 10 minute stand up set. I’d spoken in public and been in plays but never tried to do comedy. It was in front of maybe 15 people, most of them my friends, but I was so nervous I was shaking. My best joke was something about how you can’t ever tell someone how little sleep you got last night without them trying to top you (“Well I invented a time machine just so I could go back to last night and keep myself awake.”) I got done in about 3 minutes which included the time it took me to drink the Fresca I had brought to illustrate a joke I had. A joke about Fresca. Everyone was super nice and really it wasn’t terrible.

Then the guy after me told a story about getting beat up by the teenage girls at the correctional facility where he worked and killed. We were all crying it was so funny. So, not Fresca-level of funny, but pretty darn funny.

My best friend acted out the poem with hand puppets. The Jabberwock came back to life at the end and chased me off the stage to big laughs.

Good times.

He played the President of the U.S. and she played his daughter.
