I forgot that Cary played a pirate, but he was the coolest in that movie. He was a complex hero that had not be shown in the movies I had seen to that point. I will definitely rewatch it soon.

The normal dirty pirate character in most stories never really interested me much, but once I saw The Dread Pirate Roberts I was hooked, and I destroyed at least a couple VHS copies of the movie re-watching the swordfight between Elwes and Patinkin over and over again. Years later when I had a job at a video store I remember Princess Bride coming on our Direct TV display, and I had it so well memorized that I just kept quoting it as I worked. In the middle of my shift I left to go next door and pick up a small pizza for my lunch, when I walked in the front door, I was still quoting in perfect time with the movie. My manager never looked at me the same way again.

Disney’s album/storybook Peter Pan. It told the story on complete with wonderful songs like Jock the Croc who swallowed the clock and goes tick tock all the while! I still know all the songs by heart and was so disappointed that they were not in the movie. It really brought Peter Pan and Captain Hook to life for me.

Anyway, the first pirate-related thing I got into was the original game in the “Monkey Island” series when I was a kid. The insult swordfighting continues to be my favorite part of the game. I’ve even done a Let’s Play of the remake, so you know I’m a big fan of it! 🙂

We had just moved back to Tulsa from a year my dad spent in the DC area for training for his job, and I wanted my room done like a ship’s cabin. Probably influenced by the Atlantic Ocean? I had a pirate chest toy box my dad built, and a net above my desk with seashells and sand dollars, my bedspread was a beach. But best of all was a huge poster of a two cartoon pirate ships, filled with pirates fighting each other. There were hundreds of them. One had fallen to the deck and his head had split open and a fried egg had come out of it. It was a very silly poster. I have tried for years to find it on the web, but my memory is too spotty to succeed.

You have no idea how excited I am for this episode. I opened the website on my work computer and gasped when I saw it was Cary Elwes. My boss even asked if I was okay.

My first pirate related obsession was Hook (I got into Princess Bride later in life). I can still quote that movie word for word and love to quote it randomly (where’s my bubbly? give me my bubbly!) and who doesn’t start yelling RUFIO! RUFIO! RUFIO! RU-FI-OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO now and then? I also hated myself for not being able to crow well(You can fly, you can fight and you can…[crow])

I know, what “BAD FORM!” I was also really into “Hook” in general and remember getting the “Pan” coconut sword after getting my tonsils removed.
