He let his politics dictate how he reviews movies. Brown Bunny was not a terrible movie, it was just controversial politically because there was an x rated sex scene in it. He had the same problem all throughout his career. Clockwork Orange and Dirty Harry are two other examples.

My other big problem with Ebert is that he gave a lot of film school type opinions. If you were to ask him what his favorite films are he would only pick things made many decades ago. Citizen Cane and Gone with the Wind are not truly the most entertaining films to him, he was told that they were the best films when he was in film school so that’s what he tells people
