She decided she could give me a haircut and I went along with it because why not? I was 8, so I didn’t care what my hair looked like. Anyway, I remember her forcing my head under the sink and then cutting my hair with scissors from the drawer. Afterwards, me and my sister went to bed (I would often sleep on my sister’s floor back then, as I was afraid to be alone) and when my parents came in to check on us, my sister, who must have understood she made a hair cutting error, tried to cover before I popped my head up and mortified my mom.

I don’t remember how she dealt with it, but I imagined they cut what they could and waited for it to grow back.

I ended up with hair on top but none on the sides like a reverse monk or something.

1. I had long curly hair as a toddler and because boy’s toddler clothes from the early 80s looked a lot like middle aged women’s clothing from the late 70s, there was much gender confusion.
2. In my early elementary school days, I alternated between bad home-haircuts shaggy Beatles haricuts done by my mom and pathetic attempts at “skater cuts” inspired by Gleaming the Cube done by my sister.
3. The first time I was able to choose my own haircut, I chose to emulate my brother’s haircut…a mullet.
