Specific to this podcast: home schooling. My older sister home schools her 3 kids, and they have better social lives than I ever had as a public school brat. There are several options for curricula to follow, with companion books to refresh & reteach the parent/teacher, so you don’t have to know or remember everything. (It’s the same thing public grade school teachers do, you know.) The kids have to pass state-mandated tests to prove they’re learning (and aren’t truant). They attend co-operative learning meetings with other home schooled children in the local home school community where parents and/or tutors teach group classes. For example, my sister has a degree in English and teaches the literature class, and they have several actual scientists on hand for stuff like Chemistry. The kids are involved in several extra-curriculars like sports teams, dance/karate classes, Girl Scouts/Cub Scouts, local theater, and church functions. Plus the kids are friends with other kids in the neighborhood, kids who go to public school; they also have access to the internet. So don’t worry, they’re hip to the current jive. lol My oldest niece, who just graduated high school ahead of time – and yes, attended prom, is now in college. Are there strange sub-human beings out there who are hiding their children in a basement and brainwashing them under the guise of “home schooling?” Sure. But that’s a whacko minority, and it’s naive to assume that’s what all home schooling is about. /rant 😛

My husband joined me a couple months later, but the first trip out there was all by myself. 2 days and about 45 podcasts (including some Pop My Culture!) later, I arrived in Baltimore.

I was living in DC, rented a car and drove the junk I had with me to NH, then bought a car and took most of the rest of my junk with me to WY, where I live now. Went through several hundred episodes of various Star Trek podcasts, and happened to hit Chicago the same day a friend was having a baby shower there. …really hoping to get a job back on the east coast someday soon and do part of it in reverse…
