Though I like to read, I’ve always found many of the classics uninteresting or inaccessible. The first one that I got really absorbed in was Catcher in the Rye. It was assigned in a high school English class, so I was at just the right age to really become engrossed in the story.

I love the classics sooooo much. My first was “Kidnapped” by Robert Louis Stevenson. I fell in love with Scotland and went there about 18 months ago for my dream vacation. I know that Scotland in 1751 and today are very different, but the countryside was as beautiful as described. This book is still my favorite, 30 years later.

The first one I loved was Lord of the Flies. I went into it expecting to hate it because my dad had mentioned it being his most hated book, but I’ll never understand how that is. The book is wonderful. The movie, starring young Balthazar Getty, is also very good (and facilitated my teenage crush on teenage Balty).

I love Arye Gross. Excellent podcast.

There’s no book I particularly enjoyed at High School, but I did love “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and beautifully illustrated by Gustave Dorรฉ. It was the first time I didn’t cynically dismiss poetry.

I read the Scarlet Letter. I was so impassioned by her struggles as a mom, and having to be emblazoned with a mark showing her sons. I just thought it was so unfair! Like Vanessa, this was when my classmates groaned, and I read it twice, just to make sure my report was incredible. I got an a+ and extra credit ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anne of Green Gables. It was one of the first books I ever was forced to read that stared a strong female lead. Dream vacation is still to go to P.E.I.

I almost never like books assigned to me. I’m a Jane Austen freak (seriously, I own like published fan fiction on Pride and Prejudice…it’s sad) but when assigned “Emma” I couldn’t sit through it.

The only book I remember enjoying was not a novel necessary since it was assigned in like 6th grade but it was “The Giver”. It was the first time my young, impressionable, little mind went “wow, my future is fucked”
