I lived on a small cut-through street with a bunch of kids my age and the rule for all the kids was no one was allowed to cross the street without an adult (to clarify we were around 5 at this point). I was at a neighbor’s house when her cousin showed up. She was very mean to me and kept teasing me. I got so angry I swore for the first time! I called her a bitch and then crossed the street…BY MYSELF! If my life was a movie I would have gotten hit by a car and never crossed a street again but none of that happen. I never even got yelled at for crossing the street or calling her a name which is why whenever I cross a street now I jaywalk while screaming obscenities.
    I kid.

I used to get in a lot of trouble for tying knots on things, as in I would get really long pieces of string or thread and make spiderwebs in between the railings on the stairs. A rule was put in place that I wasn’t allowed to have string, so I cut up and tied together rubber bands instead.
And then my dad fell over a trip wire I’d made down a flight of stairs and I stopped because I was 6 and I thought I’d killed him.

The first rule that I rebelled against was of course the bedtime rule, I never wanted to “go to sleep” at some obscenely early time as a kid. I had way too much energy and imagination to shut that off at 8:00! I would stay up under my sheets, listening to my radio with some headphones on. I remember I had a Pete and Pete moment long before I ever watched the show. I remember listening to the radio and hearing RHCP Aeroplane, and going “what was that”!!! Completely changed my life. Took me years to find it again, but up until that point i was listening to pop music. That was my on little “Hard Days Pete” moment in my life, all of that coming from that little act of rebellion!

Hah, Cole, you can’t tell me Ross Perot selling pork on a stick will ever be dated!?

My parents were both dentists, so there were serious limits on candy. I had to pretend to give a shit about my brother’s little league games to get brought ever week, then sneak off to the concessions stand to buy as much candy as I could afford.

When I was a little, little kid I had a big wheel that I was allowed to ride in the driveway but not on the street. For no apparent reason one day, using the completely flawed logic that my uncle who was babysitting me would think that I was driving the big wheel on the yard side of the ditch, I just went for it and drove down the road in front of the house. I honestly don’t remember the punishment but I completely remember breaking the rule and being pretty pleased with myself in spite of the fact that it was actually pretty stupid.

I think I was about 4 years old when my parents told me not to play in the wooded area next to the apartment building. I went anyway and ended up falling down a steep incline and getting stuck in mud. Another kid went to get my parents and they had to line up and help drag me out, like Winnie the Pooh getting pulled out of the honey tree.
